The ViDCAST Studio

Springside's YouTube Channel

This video—featured on SchoolTube as "Video of the Week"—was created from start to finish by Elizabeth Robison '08 for a Video Production class project. The video features an original song by fellow student Emily Auerbach. While Beth captured the colors of the Fall, she also became interested in color correction while making the video.

Springside’s ViDCAST Studio, constructed just over a year ago, has placed creativity and self-expression in the community domain. The Studio is an innovative digital video classroom featuring today’s leading technology. Just peek in the window and you will find students huddled over a monitor exploring, composing, and crafting original work. The Studio’s central location on “Main Street,” a fresh, clean design, and the large plasma screens looping student content, make it buzz with energy and creativity.

Its design fosters collaboration and informal conversations among the students and their teachers, including Dr. Ellen Fishman-Johnson, a composer and 2007 Apple Distinguished Educator, who oversees the studio. At any time, you will find students huddled over a monitor to explore, critique, and enjoy each other’s creative work in progress.

The lab features an oversized window that piques the curiosity of passing students, allowing them to enjoy the energy and creative buzz inside the studio. Large TV monitors on its exterior walls and polycarbonate ceiling project non-stop loops of student work, grabbing people’s attention with moving images—like “moths to a flame,” says architect Alan Metcalfe.

“The plasma screens outside the studio transform the hallway into a living, breathing gallery of student work,” says Springside’s educational technologist, Jennifer Vermillion. “ViDCAST is a very modern space that allows teachers and students to experience and experiment with a 21st-century learning community.”

The studio is equipped with the latest Apple technology, including 10 workstations and 8 laptops outfitted with state-of-the-art video editing and digital audio software, professional video cameras, special microphones, and a SMART Board for instruction.
